- Red fort, Delhi
Lal Quila or Red Fort, an UNESCO heritage site, is the apex of Mughal architecture, and hence, once of a kind structures of our country. This is one of the most well preserved and famous forts of India. Made completely out of red sandstone, the fort has been maintained in an excellent condition, and that is why the fort still has not lost its scarlet tinge. Crafted majorly using Islamic architectural sensibilities, the structures within the fort also exhibit strong elements borrowed from the Hindu, Timurid and Persian architectural styles. The fort lies along the “holy river of India” Yamuna River. There is an archaeological museum and an Indian war memorial museum within the fort. It is the most powerful symbol of India’s sovereignty,The Prime Minister of India addresses the nation and raises the flag of India on Independence and Republic Day of India.
- Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
The Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur is considered to be one of the largest forts in India. The unique thing about the fort is that it is situated at an elevated platform of very thick walls as
boundaries, thus making the fort look very imposing. The Mehrangarh Fort is situated 400 above the city and founded by Rao Jodha. There are seven gates built by each Maharaja’s for their victory,A gate named Jayapol built by Maharaja Man Singh. Inside the fort, several brilliantly crafted and decorated palaces are found like Moti Mahal,Sheesha Mahal etc. It’s also interesting to know that a small part of the movie – ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ was shot in this fort.
- Chittorgarh fort, Rajasthan
Chittorgarh Fort is the largest fort of India and the grandest in the state of Rajasthan. It is situated on the left bank of the Berach river. It is also called as Water Fort, The fort had 84 water bodies inside, out of which only about 22 exist today. Spread over about 2.8 kms and 400 acres and the highest elevation in the fort is at about 1075 metres. The two distinct pillars in the fortress, the Kirti Stambh and the Vijay Stambh are extremely preciously carved with the most intricate artwork found in the region. It is also a World Heritage Site.
- Bhangarh Fort, Alwar- The Haunted
Famous for the historical ruins and the ghost stories, Bhangarh has been regarded as the most haunted place in the country. It is located on the way between Jaipur and Delhi. This fort in India was built by one of the Navratans of Akbar’s court, Man Singh I for his grandson Madho Singh I. It was named by Madho Singh after his grandfather Man Singh or Bhan Singh. As soon as you enter through the main gate of the ruined fort city, also known as Bhoot Bangla, it gives a chill down your spine. There are many temples, palaces and havelis within it. You can only enter the fort after 6 in the morning and have to get out by 6 in the evening.
- Gwalior Fort, Gwalior
Gwalior Fort is one of the most impenetrable fortresses located in the entire northern and southern India and is a place one definitely must visit. It is located in Madhya Pradesh built by Rana Man Singh Tomar. This magnificent monument holds a specimen of the wonderful ancient Indian architecture. The major attractions of Gwalior fort are the famous Sas-Bahu temple,Gujari Mahal which is now a museum and The Man Mandir. Touching the skyline of Gwalior, this prominent building is of extreme importance to the rich history and heritage of the country.
- Kangra Fort, Himachal Pradesh
The famous Kangra Fort was built by the royal family of Kangra is situated on the junction of the Bangana and Manjhi River in the Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh. This fort is a witness to thousands of years of grandeur, invasion, war, wealth and evolution. This mighty fort traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, which is mentioned in the Mahabharata epic.It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest fort in India.
- Golkonda Fort, Hyderabad
The famous Golkonda fort which is located at Hyderabad, Arndhra Pradesh was built by Kakatiya Kings. The fort has one of the richest histories in the monuments of its time. The awesome Golconda Fort is famous for its military architecture and One of the most wonderful monuments in India.
